How Much Serious Illness Cover do you need?
The level of cover you need is based on your individual circumstances and as life changes these needs change.
Generally you will need enough cover to pay the outstanding balance on your liabilities such as your mortgage, your car loan and any bills. If you have a family you will need to work out how much they will need to maintain their current lifestyle and compare this to how much the state will pay you. This is the difference you will have to make up.
Many financial advisers use a rough rule of thumb of five times salary.
How much will the State pay in the event of a Serious Illness?
|Current State Disability Benefit (assuming full PRSI contributions have been paid)||€134.80 per week with an additional €16.80 per child (subject to minimum and maximum limits)|
According to John Geraghty of LABrokers.ie “Where PRSI contributions have not been paid a reduced benefit will be payable or a means-tested payment made”.
